Before

It Started With One Monument

What began as a historical  research project led me to the grave of Sheriff John Macon Poag. His monument had fallen, weathered by time and nearly lost to neglect.

I wanted to do more than document what remained. I wanted to understand how to preserve it properly — safely, respectfully, and without causing further harm.

Restoring that one monument became something much larger. It sparked a commitment to preserving cemeteries, protecting the stories they hold, and helping others see why these places still matter.

Preserving More Than Stone

Our work brings together preservation, research, education, and storytelling — because caring for a cemetery means caring for both the place and the people whose stories it holds.

Preserve

Care for historic cemeteries through safe cleaning, conservation, and thoughtful restoration.

Research

Uncover the people, events, and histories connected to the cemeteries and monuments we preserve.

Educate

Share practical knowledge that helps communities understand, protect, and respectfully care for historic cemeteries.

Storytelling

Bring the people behind the monuments to life by sharing their stories with care, accuracy, and dignity.

Help Preserve What Matters

Historic cemeteries belong to all of us. Whether you volunteer at a cleanup, help uncover a forgotten story, or support a preservation project, you can help ensure these places—and the people they represent—are not forgotten.

Volunteer With Us

Join us for cemetery cleanup and preservation projects. No experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn, work carefully, and help preserve these special places.

Support Our Work

Your support helps provide preservation supplies, fund restoration projects, and make it possible for us to continue protecting historic cemeteries and sharing the stories they hold.

The Work Continues

Every cemetery holds stories worth remembering. Follow our latest preservation projects, discoveries, and stories—and see how Respect & Restore is helping keep the past from being forgotten.
